  • Apr 15, 1999 - MailAndNews.com and OperaMail.com have upgraded their webmail interfaces with many new features, including spell check, forwarding, vacation reply, POP3, filters, etc.
  • Apr 15, 1999 - Those of you with a LycosMail account may have been confused since Lycos started using MailCity as its primary free email system. You can still use your LycosMail account, however, and can login at any of the following URL's:
  • Apr 08, 1999 - The Taiwanese sites AccLife and Webmail are no longer accessible and 5Star is no longer offering free POP3 accounts.
  • Apr 07, 1999 - MSN Hotmail releases versions in French, German and Japanese and also exceeds 40 million users - Read the press release
  • Apr 02, 1999 - Bitmail.com is no longer offering email forwarding.
  • Mar 30, 1999 - NetAddress/USA.net will start charging $1/month for POP3 and Forwarding services in April.
  • Mar 22, 1999 - PeachWorld are no longer offering free POP3 services. Again, they have closed down due to abuse by spammers.
  • Mar 03, 1999 - The French site, Altern.org has closed down after several legal proceedings were filed against it over the content of some of its free personal homepages. Details of the cases are displayed on the site, which have serious ramifications for European free webspace providers, who are now held accountable for the content of their users' personal websites.
  • Mar 02, 1999 - ENetMail and its various free email sites (CasablancaResort, VirginRiver, LifestyleWorld & ECardMail) have closed down as a result of someone illegally hacking their code.
  • Feb 10, 1999 - Mexico.com's free email is now powered by Chek, this was formerly by Commtouch.
  • Feb 10, 1999 - C3ntris is no longer offering POP3 accounts.
  • Feb 03, 1999 - Microsoft and AltaVista have struck a deal, one result of which is that AltaVista will be moving away from offering iName-powered email to MSN's HotMail.

  • Jan 13, 1999 - Postmaster.co.uk has a totally new look.
  • Jan 12, 1999 - Supernews has changed its name to remarQ, with free email available at remarqmail.com, powred by iName.
  • Jan 11, 1999 - MegaPoint has closed down its free email service due to abuse by spammers.

  • Jan 05, 1999 - MSN Hotmail Becomes First Web-Based E-Mail Delivering Free Virus Detection Software From Network Associates - Read the press release.
  • Dec 07, 1998 - MailCity now has a totally new look, as a result of its purchase by the Lycos portal. The new look is more in-keeping with the look of the Lycos site and has integrated links to many other Lycos features. Lycos now has two email systems, MailCity (by WhoWhere) and LycosEmail (by iName). When you go to their "Check Email" page they also offer a link to Microsoft's HotMail, though I'm not sure why.
  • Dec 07, 1998 - HotPop has recently changed its POP3 & SMTP settings to pop.hotpop.com and smtp.hotpop.com, respectively. They also now offer a choice of 7 domain names.
  • Dec 03, 1998 - iFrance.com now offers a very nice web-based interface as well as POP3. Their services are also now offered to anyone, anywhere, not just French residents.
  • Dec 03, 1998 - PersonalConnections has a completely new look and a new URL - http://www.pmail.net. This new version has some added features and is much faster loading.
  • Dec 02, 1998 - Excite Mail Becomes Easier for Users With Shift to 'Excite.com' Domain - Read the press release.
  • Dec 01, 1998 - MSN Hotmail, World's Largest E-Mail Provider, Surpasses 30 Million Member Milestone - Read the press release.

  • Nov 13, 1998 - AsianWired has a new web interface - powered by Chek
  • Nov 13, 1998 - Young-World (Austria) has a new web interface
  • Nov 13, 1998 - Starmedia (Latin America) has a new look
  • Nov 13, 1998 - Newmail.Net (Israel) is no longer offering SMTP access
  • Nov 13, 1998 - SingPost (Singapore) is now known as SingMail
  • Nov 13, 1998 - Law.com will soon be offering free web-based email powered by Commtouch
  • Oct 30, 1998 - The new MailExcite system is now operational. Even though it has a great look it has lost the following functionality:
    • No filters
    • No collection of POP3 mail
    • No email address finder
    • No spell check
    • No vacation reply
  • Oct 22, 1998 - Several free email providers are having problems because of their systems being abused or are closing down:
    • FNMail has ended SMTP capabilites because of spamming problems
    • Backpackers has closed it's web-based email because of "system abuse"
    • Freeaccount.com is no longer taking on new members also because of "constant abuse"
    • NJO E-Mail is closing down on November 15th, though I have no details as to why

  • Sep 29, 1998 - Surfree.com Adds Free Email to Internet Services - Read the press release. Note: This service is provided by Critical Path which used to offer Surfree mail free of charge and then started charging for it. I assume this time it will remain free.

  • Aug 26, 1998 - Infoseek yesterday finished Beta testing it's mail system. You can check the site out at www.infoseekmail.com
  • Aug 24, 1998 - AsianWired's web-based email is now up and running, provided by Emurl.
  • Aug 24, 1998 - ApexMail is now available in French. The French version is a "total conversion," all screens, modules, buttons and even error messages have been properly translated using official internet translation guides from the government of France and the Province of Quebec (Canada). A Web TV specific version in also in Final beta testing. A Spanish version of ApexMail should be ready for testing late September/early October, followed by a German version about 6 weeks later. Again, other languages versions will all constitute complete and proper translation of the whole system, not just a computer generated home page with English buttons and help sreens.

  • Aug 05, 1998 - EverPerfect's new email service is now known as Deskmail - powered by Emurl.
  • Aug 04, 1998 - Web Works is currently not issuing any new email accounts.
  • Aug 04, 1998 - Yahoo Mail has some new features - External mail messages are now color-tagged, and shading helps you easily distinguish between old and new messages!
  • Jul 29, 1998 - Xoom is currently Beta testing it's free email.
  • Jul 29, 1998 - Freestamp seems to be up and running again and also working on a web interface.
  • Jul 29, 1998 - Apexmail now offers Reminders and multiple Vacation Replies. Attachments will be available in 1-2 weeks.

  • Jun 16, 1998 - Hotmail today announced that a federal court awarded a default judgment and a permanent injunction against three spammers in a suit Hotmail filed on January 26, 1998.
  • Jun 15, 1998 - For Hotmail users, "if you have new Hotmail messages waiting when you log in, you are taken directly to your In-Box. If you don't have any new messages, you will see Centerpoint, Hotmail's new navigation center."
  • Jun 01, 1998 - "Hotmail, the world's first Web-based email service and now the world's largest email service, announced today that 100,000 people signed up for a Hotmail account in one day -- making for another Internet record."
  • Jun 01, 1998 - Hotmail claims over 15 million active email accounts.
  • May 28, 1998 - Hotmail's ExpressNotify "is no longer available for download. If you have downloaded the beta version of Express Notify and are experiencing problems, please be aware that (they) no longer provide support for this feature."
  • May 28, 1998 - Business Week, the "World's Leading Business Magazine" is now offering free web-based email provided by CommTouch.
  • May 27, 1998 - All accounts with VirginRiver will be transferred to CasablancaResort on June 1. This is because they have not renewed their licensing agreement with ENetMail.
  • May 26, 1998 - BellSouth is now offering free web-based email which has been created for them by Bigfoot. This service is only open to residents of the States covered by BellSouth.
  • May 21, 1998 - Snap! will be offering free, web-based email to Portal, by mid-June. This will be powered by iName.
  • May 12, 1998 - Due to "severe abuse," Usermail is now requiring a $1.00 setup fee on all E-mail aliases. This does not include any .edu addresses nor UK addresses, they will continue to be free without a setup charge.
  • May 11, 1998 - The Free Email Providers Guide now provides a listing of web-based email providers by special interest category and by provider.
  • May 08, 1998 - NetAddress (usa.net) has "recently disabled (their) SMTP (Outgoing Mail) server due to the overwhelming amount of SPAM mail that was being sent over it. Due to the high SPAM levels, NET@DDRESS was being unjustly blocked by many Internet providers."
  • May 07, 1998 - MailCity now has a spellchecker, however this feature still seems to be missing from the other WhoWhere systems.
  • May 07, 1998 - NetAddress (usa.net) is about to begin beta testing a new version. "This new and improved site will offer faster loading times, better e-mail features ..."
  • May 05, 1998 - LinkTrader Mail is currently not issuing any new email accounts.
  • May 01, 1998 - Hotmail has a new look available for "relatively new" browsers (IE 3/Nav 3 and above) which loads "at least twice as fast."
  • Apr 29, 1998 - Deja News is currently beta testing free web-based email, provided by WhoWhere.
  • Apr 27, 1998 - iName and Homework Central Launch First Web-based Email Service for Students And Teachers Worldwide.
    (At least, that's what their press release says! There's at least two other sites aimed at education professionals and students.)
  • Apr 23, 1998 - The Jerusalem Post online newspaper has officially launched its free web-based email service, provided by Commtouch. This site has been listed in the Free Email Providers Guide for several weeks.
  • Apr 22, 1998 - NetAddress (usa.net) has won PC Magazine's Editors' Choice Award for the best email service
